UFC CEO Dana White says he did recognize heavyweight Alexander Volkov at the UFC 333 pre-fight press conference in Abu Dhabi, according to MMA Mania. White had been criticized for seemingly not knowing who Volkov was when the heavyweight asked about title shots from the crowd.
"I absolutely knew," White told Main Event, explaining that he thought Volkov was doing a bit and kept waiting for a punchline. White said Alexander Volkanovski asked him twice whether he knew it was Volkov, and that even his staff thought he didn't.
White also said Volkov is in the mix for a title shot and will get one, calling his situation a timing issue. Volkov faces Rizvan Kuniev on Saturday at Etihad Arena.
